Once promoted into Production, your MDM solution becomes a key participant in your operational environment providing business operations with access to mastered data.  Downstream business systems will be relying on the trusted data from your MDM solution, with a team of data stewards tasked with keeping this data trustworthy.

 

Managing the operations of your MDM solution means delivering trusted data to users and systems throughout your organization in a timely manner.  So your MDM solution needs to be functioning and accessible with data that can be relied upon.  For that, there are 2 key operational activities required:

Application Support is tasked with keeping your MDM solution performing at optimal levels, resolving any issues that impact operations, managing access and security, and reporting on operations to management.

Where application support is focused on maintaining the integrity of the MDM system (software, hardware, network infrastructure), Data Stewardship is focused on maintaining the integrity of the data that flows through that system; correct, accurate, complete, and consistent, with an absence of duplication.  Typically the responsibility of “business”, not IT, it is an integral element of a functioning MDM solution.

Data stewardship relies upon an MDM solution to deliver records to Stewards for investigation about the data, which are then returned once a corrective action has been taken.  And an MDM solution is not able to carry out its role of delivering trusted data without the data stewardship function.
